Feeling The Fear
In 2020, I was asked for help by a lady that had acute anxiety. She was continually switching between the Fight to Flight button and had residual health issues including Fibromyalgia connected to her anxiety.
I will call her Suzanne but that is not her real name. Suzanne had chronic pain and fatigue caused by domestic abuse over many years, however, she now had a lovely new partner who was very supportive and she was very positive about her future.
Suzanne suffered from nightmares and did not like being in bed on her own at night. A simple noise outside would cause her extreme fear and she had to sleep with the light on and something playing on her iPad to keep her company. Her fear was that her ex-husband had found out where she was living and was trying to get in to her house.
What made it a joy to work with Suzanne was that, despite her trauma of domestic abuse, she was so positive but needed help in understanding why her primitive brain was letting her pain undermine her and how to overcome her nightmares..
During our 7 sessions together, we worked on her scaling which improved tremendously and we worked on what her plans were for her new life. We only talked about her domestic abuse and pain issues in our Initial Consultation. After that, it was all about what Suzanne wanted for the rest of her life and how she was going to get there. Her first plan was to put a small extension on her house.
This is how Solution-Focussed Hypnotherapy works and it is not about the problem but about the preferred future. This is done with the techniques I use and the Hypnotherapy experience at the end of each session. Each session Suzanne would tell me what had been better that week and this is how I run the first part of my session. We must always look for something, even something small that has been better during the week. We also talk about practising the 3p’s daily. That is Positive Action, Positive Interaction and Positing Thinking.
Suzanne has many plans for her new house and for a new life with her partner. I managed to help her sort out her nightmares and to sleep better. Her positivity really helped her and she was signed off with flying colours.
